Compare use, dates and readings
Check whether the billing period changed, whether the reading was estimated, and whether guests, irrigation or other activities increased demand. Compare the amount of water recorded, not only the dollar total. Contact the utility about reading or billing questions before drawing conclusions from a single bill.
Look for the quiet, ordinary causes
A toilet that refills between uses, an outdoor fixture that drips or irrigation running longer than expected can increase use without leaving water indoors. Observe accessible areas without dismantling equipment. A continuing running-water sound, damp surface or repeat stain is useful information to record for a plumber.
Use the meter carefully
If a meter is safely readable, note the reading when water-using fixtures and equipment are off. Some systems, including irrigation or automatic treatment equipment, may still operate. A change can justify further investigation, but it does not by itself locate the leak. Do not alter the city meter or its connections.
Ask for a focused detection plan
Explain the symptoms and any observations. The assessment may involve isolating lines, checking fixtures and choosing appropriate detection methods. Ask what the diagnostic scope includes, what limitations may remain and whether the repair is priced separately. A guess based on one damp spot is not the same as a confirmed source.
Keep the repair paperwork
Denton’s water and sewer leak adjustment program has eligibility and documentation requirements. Keep repair invoices and ask the utility for the current process and deadlines. An adjustment is not guaranteed, and a plumbing company cannot approve it on the city’s behalf.
